The Beginning of a Legend
Born in February 1958 in Seoul, Kim Hyun-sik grew up in a privileged family. However, his father’s business failure led to a turbulent childhood. He discovered his love for music in middle school when he first encountered the guitar. This marked a turning point in his life.
The Path to Stardom
After dropping out of high school, Kim Hyun-sik passed the high school equivalency exam and began singing at music cafes in Myeong-dong. His talent caught the attention of comedian Jeon Yoo-seong, who encouraged him to pursue a career as a singer. In 1980, he released his debut album Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. Although it wasn’t a commercial success, critics hailed it as a “cursed masterpiece” for its innovative blend of rock, R&B, and jazz.
A Glorious Era: “Like Rain, Like Music”
In 1984, his second album Loved You brought him widespread fame. His third album, Like Rain, Like Music, released in 1986, was later recognized as one of Korea’s top 100 albums. His music became deeper and more emotionally resonant, captivating audiences with its heartfelt expression.
Among his greatest hits, “My Love by My Side” stands out for its heartfelt melody and emotional depth, showcasing his signature husky voice. Tracks like “Loved You” and “Like Rain, Like Music” also highlight the essence of Korean ballads and remain beloved classics.

Kim Hyun-sik was more than a singer; he was a transformative figure in Korean music history. In 1990, he released his fifth and final album, Lament, despite being diagnosed with cirrhosis. Balancing hospital visits and recording sessions, he poured his remaining energy into his music.
